Golden Sardine Karen & Polly

This premiere is a result of a theatre lab that employs the collaboration of theater professionals, students and faculty. The cast features WC drama instructor Polly Sommerfeld and local chanteuse Karen Somerville. Drama Department Chair, Dale Daigle directs with design support from Jason Rubin, Lawrence Stahl and a crew of students.

The GOLDEN SARDINE is a poetic vamp on the tragic poet archetype that utilizes aspects of the life and times of Bob Kaufman, a talented and complex poet who was instrumental in creating the Beatnik movement. Today he is barely remembered despite having appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and shunned invitations to lecture at Harvard. This poetic presentation does not pretend to retell Kaufman's life story in a traditional narrative fashion. This exploratory theatre production provides an audience with facets of the poet's existence allowing space for observers to come to their own conclusions as to how this character actually managed to create beautiful poetry.
